About this division

When the parties agree a loss is covered but disagree on its value, the appraisal clause offers a faster path than litigation. This division provides umpires and appraisers with more than 25 years of estimating and claim handling experience.

Our core service area is Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Colorado, Nebraska and Iowa, and we accept umpire appointments nationwide.

Services and guides

How appraisal works

When the parties agree a loss is covered but disagree on its value, either side can demand appraisal. Each side names an appraiser; if they cannot agree, an umpire decides the remaining items, and any two signatures set the award. ORA serves as an appraiser for either side or as a neutral umpire.

Common questions

What does an umpire decide?

The umpire decides only the items the two appraisers could not agree on. An award signed by any two of the three sets the amount of loss.

Does appraisal decide coverage?

No. Appraisal sets the amount of loss. Coverage questions are decided under the policy and state law.

Who can appoint ORA as an appraiser?

Either party to the policy may appoint ORA, in one role per matter, subject to a conflict check.

How fast can you start?

We respond to every inquiry within two business days and begin once the engagement letter is signed.

How are fees set?

Fees are confirmed in writing before work begins. Volume arrangements are available.
